Regulation and the Internet

Javernpaa, Tiller, and Simons article provides a key definition about the relevance of regulation and mechanisms of control among business entities operating in the Internet. It justifies the purpose and value of these protocols to ensure that even at a new playing field, the level of competition and collective principles related to businesses are administered. These directives in turn provide greater lengths in justifying the appropriate directions to signify the emergence of a digital economy (Javernpaa, Tiller, and Simons, 2003).

Reflecting on the article, the choice of using public choice theory has indeed provided many companies the ability to capitalize on the existing market but not further any trends that can lead to a monopoly or total control. Rather, the provision provided by standards and regulation strategies have transcended to create dynamic institution within the Internet to still operate on appropriate rules governing business entities. Here, it allows business organizations to respond to these trends with consideration in both governmental and non-governmental factors accordingly.

Similarly, the evolution of the Internet can also be seen as both constructive and open for hurdles along the way. Though the development of regulation signified a redefinition of these structures, it can be argued that there are still loopholes within these processes that need to be addressed by the governing body. Likewise, one must not also forget about the value and impact that (big) companies have over this issue. Here, regulation does not mainly entail setting up ground rules for appropriate usage it transcends to ensuring that a collective responsibility and accountability is facilitated.

In the end, the article was successful in portraying the development and the need for establishing regulatory mechanisms on companies within the Internet. It was able to set these trends and how it applies to old and new entrants within the businesses. However, the appropriate mechanisms must also be put in place to justify and amend these hurdles altogether. Proper coordination and analysis must be made in both the macro and micro-level to ensure that interests are balanced in accordance to the needs of all actors and justify proper directions for taking advantage what the digital economy has to offer.
